Electromyogram (EMG)

Description
An electromyogram (EMG) is also called electromyography is a test that measures the electrical activity of the muscle at rest and with contractions. The EMG graphs this electrical activity and the impulses are measured by inserting needle electrodes into the muscle. An EMG is used to detect many diseases such as muscular dystrophy, inflammation of the muscles, peripheral nerve damage, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, pinched nerves, carpal tunnel syndrome, and spinal cord injuries such as herniated disc.

Common Complications
Complications are rare. The nerve or muscle can be injured from insertion of the electrode into the skin.
