Decompression laminectomy

Description
Decompresssion laminectomy is the removal of the entire bony lamina, a portion of the enlarged facet joints, and the thickened ligaments overlying the spinal cord and nerves. The lamina are two broad plates, extending posteriorly from the pedicles, fusing together to complete the roof of the vertebral arch. The surgery is done to relieve the narrowing of the spinal canal from spinal stenosis, degenerative disk disease, herniated disc, sciatica, and spondylosis.

Common Complications
Complications include: Nerve damage or persistent pain. All surgery comes with the risk of infection and blood clots. General anesthesia runs the risk of allergic reactions or breathing problems.
