CT or CAT scan (computed tomography)

Description
A series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body taken by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. Also called computed tomography.

Common Complications
CT scans require radiation. All radiation increases the risk of cancer later in life. At times intravenous contrast is given with a CT scan. The contrast rarely can damage the kidneys, and some patients can be allergic to the contrast resulting in a rash to life-threatening swelling and low blood pressure.
