Craniotomy (hole in the head)

Description
A surgical procedure where an opening is made in the skull for examining and treating brain disorders including cancer, aneurysms, and blood clots.

Common Complications
Surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Other complications include: stroke, seizures, brain swelling, brain bleeding, nerve damage and muscle paralysis or weakness, CSF leak, and permanent brain damage with associated disabilities. Complications may require another craniotomy to repair the damage. Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
