Coronary artery bypass operation (bypass blocked heart artery)
Description
A surgical procedure where a blood vessel, usually taken from the leg or chest, is grafted onto a blocked artery of the heart, bypassing the blockage and restoring blood flow. It can be done on one or multiple arteries. By restoring blood flow to the heart, it can prevent heart attacks.

Common Complications
Overall mortality is estimated to be 4%, risk of heart attack during or after the procedure is 5%-10%, and the risk of stroke is 1%. The risk of bleeding requiring re-exploration surgically is about 5%. The surgery can result in post-operative pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
