Cone biopsy (sample of cervix)

Description
A surgical procedure to remove a cone-shaped piece of tissue from the cervix and cervical canal. Cone biopsy, also called conization, may be used to diagnose or treat a cervical condition such as cancer.

Common Complications
Vaginal bleeding is the most common complication. Rarely the bleeding can be severe requiring an immediate hysterectomy. Reactions to the anesthesia and infection can also occur. The cervix can be damaged causing scarring and making future pregnancies difficult.
