Computed tomography (CT or CAT scan)

Description
A series of detailed pictures of areas inside the body taken by a computer linked to an x-ray machine. Also called CT or CAT scan.

Common Complications
CT scans require radiation. All radiation increases the risk of cancer later in life. At times intravenous contrast is given with a CT scan. The contrast rarely can damage the kidneys, and some patients can be allergic to the contrast resulting in a rash to life-threatening swelling and low blood pressure.
