Colectomy (remove large intestine)

Description

Description

A surgical procedure to remove the colon or a portion of the colon. An open colectomy is the removal of the colon through a surgical incision made in the wall of the abdomen. Laparoscopic-assisted colectomy uses a thin, lighted tube attached to a video camera and allows the surgeon to remove the colon without a large incision. This may be indicated in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and other conditions.

Common Complications

Common Complications

Surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) and lungs (pulmonary embolus). Leaking of intestinal contents into the abdomen and damage to other organs in the abdomen can also occur. With time scar tissue can develop causing adhesions and blockages of the bowel (intestinal obstruction). Patients without a colon can also suffer from chronic diarrhea. Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
