Chorionic villus sampling CVS (detects birth defects)

Description
A diagnostic procedure used during pregnancy to diagnose birth defects. A small sample of placental cells called the chorionic villi is obtained by inserting a small tube through the pregnant patient's vagina and cervix into the uterus. CVS can test for conditions such as Down syndrome, Tay Sachs disease, and cystic fibrosis. It is performed during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Common Complications
