Cholesterol (HDL, LDL)

Description

Description

Cholesterol is a wax like substance in the body and is necessary for normal body function. Having too much cholesterol can cause fatty deposits in the blood vessels (atherosclerosis) and lead to heart attacks and strokes. The blood test consists of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and HDL cholesterol. Having high levels of LDL (bad cholesterol) increases one's risk of atherosclerosis while having high levels of HDL (good chlolesterol) decreases the risk. Recommended values are listed. Total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL, LDL less than 100 mg/dL, and HDL above 50 mg/DL.
