Surgery can result in pain, infection or blood clots of the legs (deep vein thrombosis) or lungs (pulmonary embolus). Damage and leaking of a bile duct can result in a fluid collection and abscess (collection of pus). At times a stone can be left behind (retained stone) in one of the bile ducts. Patients can infrequently have bad reactions to the general anesthesia including allergic reactions and very rarely a heart attack or stroke.
