Chemoembolization (treatment for liver cancer)

Description
A procedure to block the blood supply to a tumor while anticancer drugs are administered directly into the tumor. This permits a higher concentration of drug to be in contact with the tumor for a longer period of time.

Common Complications
The embolization chemical can travel to the wrong area resulting in the destruction of healthy tissue. The most serious complication involves infection and death of the liver resulting in death. Patients can have allergic reactions to the dye resulting in rash, swelling, breathing problems and death. The contrast dye can damage the kidneys and rarely cause kidney failure resulting in the need for dialysis.
