Cesarean section (surgical delivery of baby)

Description
A surgical procedure used when a woman cannot deliver a baby vaginally, or if a baby is in distress during labor. An incision is made in a woman's abdomen and uterus to deliver the baby. It is also called c-section.

Common Complications
Any major surgery can result in infection, pain, and the development of blood clots in the legs or lungs after surgery. A c-section can result in an intra-abdominal infection, intestinal obstruction, or damage to the uterus or other organs in the pelvis.
