Cerebral angiography (brain artery images)

Description
A diagnostic procedure to x-ray the blood vessels of the brain using contrast injected into the blood stream. It can be used to diagnose problems of the brain and brainstem such as aneurysm or stroke.

Common Complications
The vessel being examined can be damaged and torn resulting in bleeding or loss of the vessel. A blood clot can develop in the vessel after the procedure rarely resulting in a stroke. Patients can have allergic reactions to the dye resulting in rash, swelling, breathing problems and death. The contrast dye can damage the kidneys and rarely cause kidney failure resulting in the need for dialysis.
