CBC (complete blood count)

Description
A complete blood count (CBC) test measures the number of red blood cells (RBC), white blood cells (WBC), and platelets. The size and shape of the red blood cells, and the types of white blood cells are identified. This test is done to diagnose anemia, infections, cancer, and other blood diseases. Anemia is defined as a low RBC, low hematocrit, and low hemoglobin. Elevation of the WBC is usually associated with an infection. Platelets are needed to clot the blood and having too low a number is called thrombocytopenia. Normal values are listed. The number of RBC varies with altitude: Male: 4.7 to 6.1 million cells/mcL, Female 4.2 to 5.4 million cells/mcL. WBC 4,500 to 10,000 cells/mcL. Hematocrit varies with altitude: Male 40.7 to 50.3%, Female 36.1 to 44.3%. Hemoglobin varies with altitude: Male: 13.8 to 17.2 gm/dL, Female: 12.1 to 15.1gm/dL. MCV: 80-95 demtoliter. MCH 27-31 pg/cell. MCHC 32-36 gm/dL. Platelets 150,000 to 450,000 platelets per microliter.
