Description
A diagnostic procedure used to explore the coronary arteries, involving use of a catheter entering the body from an artery in the leg, and passed into the arteries of the heart. It can help diagnose heart disease and coronary artery blockages.

Common Complications
The vessel being examined can be damaged and torn resulting in bleeding or loss of the vessel. A blood clot can develop in the vessel after the procedure. Patients can have allergic reactions to the dye resulting in rash, swelling, breathing problems and death. The contrast dye can damage the kidneys and rarely cause kidney failure resulting in the need for dialysis. The site of insertion can become infected.
