Bone marrow transplantation (replace bone marrow)

Description
A procedure to replace bone marrow. Can be used following treatment for certain cancers in which the bone marrow has been destroyed by anticancer drugs or radiation. It can also be used as a treatment for certain types of anemia's, such as sickle cell and aplastic anemia. Transplantation may be autologous (an individual's own marrow saved before treatment), allogeneic (marrow donated by someone else), or syngeneic (marrow donated by an identical twin).

Common Complications
Bone marrow transplantation is a complex and serious procedure. Complications include: low blood cells causing infection and/or anemia, breathing problems, and damage to the liver or heart.
