Arthrocentesis (joint aspiration)

Description
A procedure where a needle is inserted into a joint to remove fluid. The fluid is then tested to help diagnose infections, arthritis, gout or traumatic injuries. The procedure is sometimes done to remove the build up of fluid in the joint giving pain relief to the patient. Sometimes the doctor will insert medication at the same time.

Common Complications
Infection in the joint, and injury to tendons, nerves, blood vessels or bone.
