Arteriography (xray arteries)

Description
A diagnostic procedure to x-ray arteries. Dye is injected into the artery using a catheter or small tube which allows the vascular structures to be visualized.

Common Complications
The vessel being examined can be damaged and torn resulting in bleeding or loss of the vessel. A blood clot can develop in the vessel after the procedure. Patients can have allergic reactions to the dye resulting in rash, swelling, breathing problems and death. The contrast dye can damage the kidneys and rarely cause kidney failure resulting in the need for dialysis.
