ABG (arterial blood gas)

Description

Description

The test measures the acidity (pH) and the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the blood. A sample is taken from an artery. An ABG measures how well the lungs are functioning and is useful in asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). It is also helpful in disorders that affect the blood chemistry such as DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis).

Common Complications

The artery can be damaged and rarely a clot. There is pain and swelling at the insertion site.
