White Coat Hypertension

Description
A phenomenon in which patients only have elevated blood pressure readings in the doctor's office and not when measured outside the clinical arena. The cause is thought to be anxiety produced by the clinic visit.

No symptoms beside anxiety are experienced. Some patients do not overtly feel anxious.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Normal blood pressure readings outside the medical clinic with elevated readings in the doctor's office confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
No treatment is needed.
