Vaginitis (Vaginal Infection Inflammation)

Description
Inflammation of the vagina. The most common causes are: bacterial infection, fungal infection, atrophy from lack of estrogen, trichomonis infection or from chemical irritation. If bacteria or trichomonis is the cause, the sexual partners should be treated as well to prevent re-infection.

Symptoms
Vaginal pain, vaginal discharge, pain with intercourse, swelling of the vulva, vaginal burning, vaginal itching.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A wet prep of the vaginal secretions is done revealing the organisms.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the cause of the inflammation and may include: antibiotics, anti-fungal medications, or estrogen.

Predictive value for preterm birth of abnormal vaginal flora, bacterial vaginosis and aerobic vaginitis during the first trimester of pregnancy.
