Vaginal Atrophy (Atrophic Vaginitis)

Description
Thinning and inflammation of the vaginal walls. The disorder occurs around or after menopause and is caused by declining levels of estrogen. Any other disorder that corresponds with lower levels of estrogen can also lead to the disorder including breast feeding, surgical removal of the ovaries, chemotherapy, or hormone therapy for breast cancer.

Symptoms
Vaginal dryness, vaginal burning, white discharge from vagina, painful intercourse, frequent urinary tract infections.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Additional tests may be done to establish the diagnosis.

Treatment
Therapy is aimed at replacing the missing estrogen and includes: estrogen cream, estrogen ring and estrogen pills.
