Toothache

Description
Occurs when the nerve in the tooth becomes exposed through tooth decay or inflamed (pulpitis). Pulpitis refers to the inflammation of the dental pulp within the tooth. The pulp contains the blood vessels, the nerves and connective tissue inside a tooth and provides the tooth’s blood and nutrients. It is mainly caused by bacteria that enter the space through tooth decay.

Symptoms
Toothache, heat or cold intolerance of the teeth, tender teeth.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. X-rays of the teeth reveal decay and the inflammation.

Treatment
Treatment depends on the extent of the tooth damage. Some cases will resolve on their own, others require filling the tooth decay and/or a root canal. Medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) and narcotic pain medications may be prescribed. Antibiotics are used if an infection is also present.
