Thyroiditis (Thyroid Inflammation)

Description
Inflammation of the thyroid gland, and depending on the cause can result in destruction of the gland. The patient can experience too much thyroid hormone (hyperthyroid), the correct amount, or too little (hypothyroid) depending on the cause and the stage of the disease. There are a number of forms of thyroiditis with the most common being: Hashimoto's thyroiditis, sub acute granulomatous thyroiditis, postpartum thyroiditis, sub acute lymphocytic thyroiditis, and drug-induced thyroiditis.

Symptoms
Symptoms can vary greatly depending on the cause and the stage of the disease. The thyroid gland in the front part of the neck can be painless or painful.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Other tests to establish the diagnosis are done.

- thyroid blood Tests
- thyroid scan
- Thyroid stimulating hormaone
Treatment
Treatment varies depending on the cause of the thyroiditis, and the cause of the thyroid inflammation.
