Thyroglossal Cyst (Neck Cyst)

Description
Congenital remnants or tracts that occurred with the dissension of the primitive thyroid during development of the fetus. The cysts cause a painless mass in the middle of the neck that moves with swallowing or tongue movement. They may become infected, leading to the development of an abscess.

Symptoms
Painless mass in the middle of the neck that moves with swallowing or with protrusion of the tongue. Other symptoms include, pain with swallowing (dysphagia), neck pain, throat pain.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A CT scan or MRI are generally done.

- CT Scan
- MRI
Treatment
Antibiotics are prescribed if an infection is present. The only definitive treatment is surgical removal.
