Symptomatic Dermatographism

Description
Dermographism is a normal body reaction and means writing on the skin. It occurs when one firmly strokes the skin causing a red line to develop secondary to capillary dilation. A small percentage of people (2-5%) have an exaggerated response that can resemble and allergic reaction.

Symptoms
Itching, hives.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. No tests are necessary.
Treatment
Avoidance of the skin stimulus and antihistamines are the treatment.
