Subconjunctival Hemorrhage (Blood In Eye)

Description
Blood that collects beneath the covering of the white part of the eye (sclera). This covering is called the conjunctiva and the disorder occurs when a small blood vessel in the conjunctiva breaks and bleeds. It can occur with or without injury, and can occur after a forceful sneeze or cough. There are few symptoms and many times the blood is noticed in the morning or by someone besides the patient. The disorder can be found in people who are taking blood thinners or if they cannot clot their blood normally.

Symptoms
Blood in the white part of the eye, minor eye discomfort may rarely be present.

Tests
A history and physical will be done. The provider may do a detailed eye exam using a slit lamp to ensure there are no other injuries. The patient's ability to clot blood may be tested.
- CBC
- Protime
- activated partial thromboplastin
Treatment
No treatment is needed unless a problem with blood clotting is identified.

11 days ago I woke up like this. routinely I go in and apply eye drops in the morning, which I did, not really paying attention I open and closed my eyes blinking then looked in the mirror to see if the red was out and lo and behold,I gasped! what the heck happened?this was at 5 am. by 5:30 I was on the way to ergent care. I have no idea what caused it...The doctor said never use the eye drops that state to get the red out, only use artifical tears. the other only thins out the vessels. I thought maybe I bumped it with the point of the dropper, but really not sure, since trauma is another reason it could happen. anyway the doctor said, I would have to look like an alien for at least 14 days, that the blood would seep back in to my system. I also had like a blood sack which made it difficult to close the eye. He told me to use ice pack every hour for 10 mins, and use the artifical tears often. rest the eyes as much as possible. its still red, but alot less and starting to see some white again. hope this helps someone else going thru this.
