Stress Incontinence (Unintentional Urination)

Description
An involuntary loss of urine that occurs with coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercise. The patient cannot stop the leaking of urine. The most common causes are previous childbirth, older age, and previous pelvic or abdominal surgery.

Symptoms
Involuntary loss of urine. It may occur with: coughing, sneezing, standing, exercising, or physical activity.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests to measure bladder function may be performed.

Treatment
Therapy depends on the severity of symptoms and how disturbing the symptoms are to the patient. Treatment may include: behavioral changes, medication, pelvic floor muscle training (Kegel exercises), and/or surgery.
