Strangulation Of Genitalia

Description
Hairs found in clothing or bedding can inadvertently wrap themselves around the penis causing decreased blood flow and if untreated, infarction of the penis. The only symptom may be excessive crying and fussiness in an infant.

Symptoms
Excessive crying, fussiness, swelling of the penis, redness of the penis.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. No tests are generally performed.
Treatment
Release of the strangulation. Close observation may be needed if vascular compromise was prolonged.
