Restless Legs Syndrome

Description
Characterized by an irresistible urge to move one's legs. It is provoked by abnormal sensations within the muscles of the legs. It is most commonly experienced at night or shortly after lying down, and can frequently cause insomnia. Older people, particularly women, are most likely to be affected. The cause of this disorder is not known but it can run in families.

Symptoms
Sleeping difficulty, persistent leg movements during sleep hours, irresistible urge to move the legs, abnormal sensation in the legs, symptoms may increase during times of stress.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. There are no additional tests to confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
There is no known cure for restless leg syndrome. Treatment includes behavioral modifications and medications. The medications used include: carbidopa/levodopa (Sinemet), tranquilizers (benzodiazepines), pramipexole (Mirapex) or ropinirole (Requip).
