Renal Trauma (Kidney Trauma)

Description
Trauma to the kidney can range from a simple contusion that causes only self-limited bloody urine to complete destruction of the kidney. The trauma can result from a blunt injury (motor vehicle accident or fall) or a penetrating injury (gun shot wound or stab wound). Symptoms and treatment depend on the injury.

Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the injury but may include: flank pain (kidney pain), bloody urine, no urine production (anuria), decreased urine output (oligourina).

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests to diagnose injury to the kidney include: intravenous pyelography (IVP), angiography, and CT scan.

- MRI
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Treatment depends on the severity and location of the injury. The treatment options range from observation to surgery.
