Renal Infarction (Kidney Death)

Description
A blockage of blood flow to the kidney causing death of kidney tissue. The blockage of the renal artery can result from a blood clot forming within the renal artery (thrombosis), or from a blood clot traveling from a distant site (embolus). The disorder is most commonly seen in patients with previous blood clots, atrial fibrillation, or heart disease. More rarely it is associated with: inflammation of the artery (vasculitis), trauma, cancer, or after surgery. The most common symptoms are back pain and bloody urine (hematuria).

Symptoms
Sudden onset of back pain, sudden onset of flank pain, bloody urine (hematuria).

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. The disorder can be identified by the following tests: angiography, renal scintigraphy, intravenous pyelography, ultrasonography, and/or enhanced CT. Blood tests to determine the extent of kidney damage and to identify any blood clotting abnormalities may be performed.
- CBC
- Chem 12
- UA
- EKG
- CT Scan
- MRI
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Treatment options include: blood thinning medications (anticoagulation), dissolving the clot (thrombolysis), or surgically removing the clot (embolectomy).
