Description

The rectum slides outside the body. The rectum is the last part of the large intestine attaching to the anus. Normally the rectum is attached inside the body by ligaments and muscles. Chronic constipation, childbirth, and other disorders can damage these attachments causing the rectum to slide out of the body through the anus. It most likely occurs with straining to pass a stool. The disease is most often seen in the elderly and is more common in women.

A reddish-colored mass that protrudes from the opening of the anus, commonly seen after a bowel movement, the lining of the rectal tissue may be irritated and slightly bleeding.

A history and physical exam will be performed.

Treatment

Treatment

The rectal mucosa must be returned to the rectum manually. In severe cases immediate surgery for repair is needed. The underlying condition must be treated..
