Pulpitis (Dental Root Inflammation)

Description
Inflammation of the dental pulp within the tooth. The pulp contains the blood vessels the nerves and connective tissue inside a tooth and provides the tooth’s blood and nutrients. It is mainly caused by bacteria that enter the space through tooth decay.

Symptoms
Toothache, heat or cold intolerance of the teeth, tender teeth, gum swelling.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. X-rays of the teeth reveal decay and the inflammation.

Treatment
Treatment depends on the extent of the infection. Some cases will resolve on their own, others require a root canal.
