Prostatectomy (Surgical Prostate Removal)

Description
Surgical removal of a part or all of the prostate. There are many types of prostatectomies but they can be divided into two main categories: 1) transurethral resection (TURP), a procedure performed to relieve urinary symptoms caused by benign enlargement); and 2) radical prostatectomy, the curative surgery most often used to treat prostate cancer.

Symptoms
Common symptoms after surgery are: abdominal pain, painful urination, bloody urine. Adverse effects depend on the type of surgery and may include the following: impotence, incontinence, difficulty urinating secondary to a stricture.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests are dependent on the type of surgery and the success of surgery and can vary widely.
Treatment
Treatment after surgery depends on the success of surgery and any adverse effects experienced.
