Priapism (Persistent Erection)
Description
A painful and persistent erection of the penis. It can occur without sexual arousal. It is a rare, but serious condition. It requires immediate treatment to prevent permanent injury and impotence. The most common causes are sickle cell anemia, self injected medications used for erectile dysfunction, and more rarely other medications used for impotence such as sildenafil (Viagra).
Symptoms
Painful persistent erection.
Tests
A history and physical exam can establish the diagnosis.
Treatment
The disorder requires immediate treatment. Priaprism occurs because the blood that caused the erection cannot exit the penis. Procedures to remove the blood and blood clot from the penis will be performed.
