Prescription Drug Abuse

Description
This abuse occurs with the use of prescription drugs, most commonly painkillers, sedatives and stimulants, in ways not intended by the prescribing doctor. The definition for prescription drug abuse ranges from taking someone else’s prescription painkiller for back pain to snorting ground-up pills to get high. Up to 15% of high school seniors have participated in prescription drug abuse. The most commonly abused drugs are oxycodone LA/Oxycontin, oxycodone/Percocet or hydrocodone/Vicodin.

Symptoms
Symptoms depend on the drug being abused. Narcotics and sedatives: confusion, constipation, poor judgment, bizarre behavior, excessive sleepiness, decreased respiratory effort, fatigue. Stimulants: fast heart rate, agitation, sweating, bizarre behavior, hallucinations, high blood pressure, insomnia.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests to determine damage done by the drug abuse may be performed.

Treatment
The therapy for withdrawal can vary significantly from drug to drug. Treatment depends on the drug being abused and the length of time the medications has been taken. For more information and help call your local poison center at 1-800-222-1222.
