Post Nasal Drip

Description
Mucus accumulation in the back of the nose and throat leading to mucus dripping down the back of the nose and down the throat. Post-nasal drip may lead to chronic sore throat or chronic cough. Post-nasal drip can be caused by chronic sinusitis, excessive or thick secretions, or impairment in the normal clearance of mucus from the nose and throat.

Symptoms
Nasal congestion, mucous draining from the nose, cough, sore throat.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed.
Treatment
Avoidance of allergens and nasal irritants can reduce symptoms. Medications include: steroid nasal sprays (beclomethasone/Beconase, flunisolide/Nasarel, budesonide/Rhinocort), oral steroids (prednisone), antihistamines, decongestants, and/or decongestant sprays.
