Polyphagia (Overeating)

Description
A syndrome of overeating that is not related to normal caloric needs. Patients have an increased appetite and an excess desire for food. The disorder has many causes, with uncontrolled glucose levels in diabetes being the most common.

Symptoms
Excessive appetite, weight gain.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A thorough history including a detailed dietary history can establish the diagnosis. Other causes are ruled out with lab tests.
Standard Workup
- CBC
- Chem 12
Treatment
Emotional support, and in some cases counseling, are recommended. Overeating can be an adverse effect of a medication, and adjustments in a patient's medication regimen may be necessary.
