Periorbital Cellulitis (Infection Around Eye)

Description
Periorbital cellulitis is an infection of the tissues surrounding the eye. Whereas orbital cellulitis is infection of the soft tissues of the eye socket. Periorbital cellulitis is more common in children and frequently occurs from a minor scratch or injury to the skin around the eye.

Symptoms
Redness, swelling and increased warmth of the eyelid and the surrounding area. A fever is often present. Unlike orbital cellulitis periorbital cellulitis does not cause the eyeball to protrude (proptosis) or limit its movements.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Cultures of the blood and any infection drainage may be done. A CT scan can define the extent of the infection.

Treatment
Treatment includes oral or intravenous antibiotics depending on the severity of the infection.
