Patellar (Knee Cap) Tendon Rupture

Description
The patella tendon attaches the patella to the lower leg (tibia) and is essential for straightening the leg. A tendon is the fibrous tissue that attaches muscle to bone in the human body. Rupture can occur from a sudden forceful straightening of the leg, from a direct blow to the tendon, or from a penetrating injury such as a laceration.

Symptoms
Knee pain, inability to straighten leg at the knee (extend), anterior knee tenderness, anterior knee swelling.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An X-ray may be done to rule out an associated fracture. An MRI or CT scan may be performed to delineate any other injuries.

Treatment
The majority of patellar tendon ruptures need to be repaired surgically.
