Parotitis (Salivary Gland Inflammation)

Description

Description

The parotid gland is a salivary gland in front of the ear. Infections can be caused by viruses (mumps) or bacteria. Bacterial infections are usually secondary to poor hygiene or a blocked salivary duct.

Symptoms

Symptoms

Swelling of the face in front of the ears, swelling below the jaw, dry mouth, abnormal tastes, foul tastes, mouth or facial pain, especially when eating, decreased ability to open the mouth, fever.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. No additional tests are needed unless the infection is extensive.

Treatment

Treatment

In some cases no treatment is necessary. Antibiotics may be prescribed. Drinking plenty of fluids and sucking on sugar-free lemon drops to increase the flow of saliva will hasten recovery. If a stone is found in the salivary duct it will be removed.
