Paronychia (Nailbed Infection)

Description
A superficial infection that involves the tissues around the fingernail. Bacteria are the most common pathogens, followed in prevalence by fungi. A paronychia can result from trauma or improper nail and cuticle care. The nail may loosen and fall off. The infection can extend and cause cellulitis of the entire finger.

Symptoms
Painful red swelling around the nail, swelling and tenderness of cuticle.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Pus or fluid may be drained and sent to a laboratory for culture.
Treatment
Warm compresses and antibiotics may resolve mild cases. More extensive infections will require surgical drainage of the infection. Antifungal medications are administered if a fungus is suspected. The hands should be kept dry.
