The infections are common in rural or developing areas of Africa, Asia, and Latin America and less common in industrialized areas. A person who visits such an area can unknowingly acquire the infection. A parasitic infection may be more common in immigrants and people with a weakened immune system.

Symptoms
Symptoms vary depending on the parasite involved but may include: fever, fatigue, vomiting, constipation, abdominal pain, diarrhea, muscle pain.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Direct identification of the parasite in stool or tissue will be done. Cultures may also be done.
Treatment
Treatment depends on the type of parasite causing the infection, and the symptoms being experienced.
