Paralytic Ileus (Intestinal Paralysis)

Description
A temporary paralysis of a portion of the intestines typically after an abdominal surgery. The syndrome causes constipation, abdominal distension, and vomiting. It usually resolves on its own by resting the bowels until peristaltic sounds are heard from auscultation of the area where this portion lies.

Symptoms
Absent bowel sounds, abdominal fullness, gaseous abdominal distention, abdominal pain and cramping, vomiting, failure to pass gas or stool (constipation), diarrhea.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. Tests to rule out obstruction are performed and include: barium enema, abdominal CT scan, upper GI and small bowel series, and/or abdominal X-rays.
- CBC
- Chem 12
- Lipase
- UA
- X-Ray
- CT Scan
Treatment
The objective of treatment is to decompress the intestine using a nasogastric (NG) tube inserted into the stomach. Surgery to relieve the obstruction may be necessary if decompression by NG tube does not relieve the symptoms, or if a post operative abscess or obstruction is suspected.
