Overuse Syndrome

Description
These are conditions characterized by chronic irritation to a body part. Many conditions fall under the category of overuse syndromes including: carpal tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome, golfer’s elbow, tennis elbow, tendonitis, sprains, and strains. Also called cumulative trauma disorder or repetitive strain injury.

Symptoms
Depends on the body part affected but includes: pain, swelling, tenderness, stiffness, decreased range of motion, blisters.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An X-ray is done to rule out a fracture. An MRI may be done to rule out a ligament tear or other soft tissue injuries.

Treatment
Treatment includes nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications/NSAIDs (ibuprofen/Motrin or Advil, naproxen/Naprosyn), pain medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), immobilization and/or physical therapy. Focused ultrasound treatments can also speed up recovery.
