Ovarian Torsion (Twisting Of The Ovary)

Description
A twisting of the ovary causing decreased blood supply and if untreated possible death of the ovary. Torsion is more likely if the ovary has a pre-existing cyst. It is more common in women less than 30.

Symptoms
Lower abdominal pain, sudden onset of pain, vomiting, the pain is cyclic increasing and decreasing.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. A ultrasound with doppler is done to confirm the diagnosis.
Standard Workup
- CBC
- Chem 12
- BHCG
- Ultrasound
Treatment
Surgery is needed to untwist the ovary and fixate the ovary to the abdominal wall to prevent recurrence.
