Ovarian Cyst

Description
Abnormal sac like structures that form in the ovaries. The most common are functional cysts that develop with menstrual cycles or pregnancy. Other cysts are endometriomas, cystadenomas, dermoid cysts, and polycystic ovaries. Treatment and symptoms depend on the type of cyst. Patients can experience abnormal vaginal bleeding and/or abdominal pain.

Symptoms
Pelvic pain, pain with intercourse, pelvic pain during movement, pain during bowel movements, pelvic pain shortly after beginning or ending a menstrual period, abnormal uterine bleeding, abdominal bloating.

Tests
A history and physical exam will be performed. An ultrasound identifies ovarian cysts, and frequently a doppler examination is done to confirm normal blood flow. Other studies may include: CT scan or MRI.

Treatment
Functional ovarian cysts usually go away without treatment. Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) may be prescribed to decrease the size and number of functional ovarian cysts.
