Osteomyelitis (Bone Infection)

Description

Description

An infection of the bone and bone marrow, and can involve any bone in the body. It is more common in rapidly growing children (5 to 14 years), especially males. Fractures, particularly those that have penetrated the skin may develop this disorder. Bones that have a prosthesis attached are susceptible as well, and the infection can occur in the recovery phase. The infection can be very resistant to treatment and last for years.

Symptoms

Pain in the bone, local swelling, redness, warmth, pain with movement of the bone, fever, nausea, general discomfort, malaise, drainage of pus through the skin.

Tests

Tests

A history and physical exam will be performed. A bone biopsy and culture is typically done. A MRI may help delineate the extent of disease.

  • Chem 12
  • X-Ray
  • MRI
Treatment

Treatment

Intravenous antibiotics will be given, followed by oral antibiotics; treatment may last for 6 weeks. Surgery may be needed to remove dead bone tissue. If a prosthesis becomes infected the hardware may need to be removed.
